It was finally over. She had finished her battle with the Reapers, and with her final sacrifice the universe would be eternally safe.
"I don't need anything else", Shepard though as her consciousness faded away, "It's fine this way. I'll miss them all, but it's fine this way."
She smiled, and then everything went black. There was no more pain, no more fear and no more regrets. Her mission was over, she had won. And with that in mind, Shepard welcomed death like an old friend...
Suddenly the soothing emptiness was breached by a wave of images. Blinding lights, strange figures and locations, rushed through her mind too fast for her to recognize. The first time we were both sitting in the room together, getting ready to take the math test that would determine our placement. I was scatterbrained and throwing things around, trying to find the pencils that I had known I would need but had still just tossed in my purse. He was lounging backwards in his chair, looking for all the world as though he didn’t have a single care in the world, including the upcoming test. It annoyed me, that I was frantic and ready to scream, while someone else could be that relaxed.
